Tequila Don Ramón Tamarindo is made entirely from Blue Weber agave, sourced from Los Altos de Jalisco in Mexico. Ernesto Acuña, marketing director of Casa Don Ramón, said: “While tamarindo has been an iconic flavour in Mexico for a long time, we have seen an increase in consumer interest here in the US, where options are more limited. “We’re eager for customers to try this unique blend of zesty tamarind and the exceptional smoothness of premium Tequila.” The tamarind-flavoured Tequila made its debut in Mexico in 2021. It sits alongside the brand’s portfolio of products: Don Ramón Limited Edition, Platinium, Punta Diamante, and Mezcal Joven. The brand also recently launched a 25th anniversary Tequila, and an extra añejo expression. The tamarind-flavoured Tequila is said to be ‘bright and slightly spicy’ with ‘delicate’ notes of tamarind. The Tequila is recommended served as a chilled shot or in a cocktail. Tequila Don Ramón Tamarindo sits at 35% ABV and is available to purchase from select retailers in the US throughout the following states: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Texas and Wisconsin. In 2020, James Bond star Pierce Brosnan joined Casa Don Ramón as global spokesperson. In June this year, The Spirits Business unveiled the world's biggest-selling Tequila brands, as reported in The Brand Champions 2023. At the start of this year, IWSR Drinks Market Analysis revealed Tequila had overtaken American whiskey by value in the US in 2022. It further predicted that Tequila would overtake vodka as the biggest-selling spirit category by value in the States this year.]]>

The three liqueur varieties join the English distillery’s growing portfolio of spirits and liqueurs, which includes Coastal Gin and Verbena Vodka. Each liqueur is made with the hand-grated zest of the ‘finest fresh fruit’ by head distiller Tom Cook. George Nightingale, Quayside Distillery owner, said: "These cellos have spent a lot of time in the making, and we are proud to offer a unique, flavoursome experience to our customers with the trio of cellos.” The centrepiece of the collection, Limoncello, is said to offer the drinker a vibrant burst of citrusy lemons, with a ‘tongue-tingling balance of punchy and tangy flavours’. Narancello is produced with oranges, and delivers a ‘sweet and refreshing’ citrus experience, while Limecello is said to capture the essence of freshly picked limes. Described as the perfect apéritif for any occasion, the cellos can be served chilled on their own or mixed with other spirits to form cocktails. By championing a ‘less waste, more taste’ ethos, the distillery said it has minimised waste across production and maximised the full potential of every lemon, lime and orange used. The cellos are each available to purchase for RRP £20 ($26) per 500ml bottle. They are all presented at 22% ABV. To celebrate the launch, Quayside Distillery is offering free delivery to those in the EX1 and EX2 postcodes for a limited time. The Spirits Business has previously explored the consumer perception of liqueurs such as limoncello. Last year, limoncello producer Chelly launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise US$1.07 million to support its US expansion plans. In The Liqueur Masters 2022, several cellos walked away with medals.]]>

Double Dutch’s Indian Tonic Water forms the base of the new Elderflower Tonic expression, which is described as a ‘versatile mixer’ that boasts delicate, lemony hints with a bitter finish. Raissa de Haas, co-founder of Double Dutch, commented: “We have been observing a market demand for a lighter, more floral tonic. There is increasing interest in natural and botanical-based products, with more health-conscious consumers seeking beverages made with real, high-quality ingredients. “A fresh Double Dutch Elderflower Tonic Water seemed the perfect way to hit this market demand, providing bartenders with an essential high quality floral mixer.” The new expression is said to be soft and rounded with a uniquely fragrant, fresh and fruity finish, alongside an aroma of orchard sweetness. It is recommended paired with floral gins, vodka, Prosecco or Champagne. Elderflower Tonic joins Double Dutch’s extensive portfolio, which includes Cucumber & Watermelon, Pomegranate & Basil, and Cranberry & Ginger Tonic, as well as a premium Skinny Tonic Water, Ginger Ale and Ginger Beer. The brand also has two cocktail sodas, Bloody Mary and Cucumber Margarita, and recently launched a Pink Grapefruit Soda. Each of Double Dutch's flavours have been created through the process of molecular gastronomy, said to result in 'unique, counter-intuitive and delicious' flavour combinations. Double Dutch is the official tonic partner of members’ club Soho House. The brand is also stocked at ‘mindful drinking hub’ Club Soda, where the first session of Double Dutch's Female Bartending Scholarship Programme was held.]]>

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/07/nucano-mezcal-heads-to-europe/feed/ 0 Mezcal producer Nucano has secured a distribution deal to expand its reach in Europe via Anker Amsterdam Spirits.

Together with the European distributor, Nucano will introduce two new expressions to the European market: Barril Nucano Mezcal, and Arroqueño Nucano Mezcal. The Barril expression is said to boast aromas of wet earth, with a lightly smoky and slightly sweet green smell. On the palate, it is described as having a dry, mineral and vegetal taste, with a slightly bitter and intense finish. Meanwhile, the Arroqueño expression is made with 100% Arroqueño agave, which offers sweet, mild and slightly smoky notes on the nose, with mineral flavours together with chocolate, fresh fruit and a ‘nice little itchy sensation’ on the tongue. Nucano Mezcal says it believes in the beauty of its Mexican culture and traditions, which it shares with the world via its mezcal. It uses a 'completely authentic' means of production, which results in ‘an artisanal mezcal of the highest quality’, made in line with the Mexican culture and its traditions. The agave is harvested by hand in the region of San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca, and the brand utilises kernel cooking in a traditional conical earth oven. The milling is carried out by horses, and fermentation takes place in wooden caskets. It is distilled in a copper pot using a wood fire. All of this is said to preserve the 100% artisanal ways of mezcal production. The new mezcal expressions can be ordered from Anker Amsterdam Spirits, with the Arroqueño available for RRP €70 (US$78) and the Barril for RRP €65 (US$73). Last month, a distiller warned that the mezcal industry must avoid ‘irresponsible’ agave farming and wild harvesting to preserve the category’s future.]]>

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/07/mount-gay-bottles-px-sherry-finished-rum/feed/ 0 Barbados-based rum producer Mount Gay has unveiled the sixth limited edition expression in its Master Blender Collection: The PX Sherry Cask Expression.

The Master Blender Collection is a celebration of Mount Gay’s heritage and expertise in rum making, and is released in limited quantities every year. For this year’s release, master blender Trudiann Branker looked to southern Spain, where Pedro Ximénez Sherry is made. The expression is crafted with pot and column still rums that have been aged in ex-American whiskey casks for a minimum of 20 years in the tropical heat and humidity of Barbados. This is said to have accentuated the interaction between the spirit and the wood. The rums were then finished for an additional year in PX Sherry casks. “I was inspired by the process behind PX Sherry, and I wanted to discover how a well matured rum would interact with the richness of the casks used to age these fortified wines,” commented Branker. “Going through some of our oldest rums to find the right ones was an incredible journey, tasting rums that have been placed in our bonds two decades ago." Branker worked closely with her research and development team to explore some of Mount Gay’s oldest rums, searching for those suitable to be finished in PX Sherry wine casks. "I was thrilled to find 20-year-old rums that stood up in terms of body and character to benefit from being finished in PX Sherry casks, and I’m honoured to add this to our Master Blender Collection," she said. Closely observing the rums over the final year of finishing, the PX Sherry wine casks are said to have created layers of roundness and complexity, and the long period of tropical ageing has provided a nose that is full of maraschino cherries, stewed fruits, charred oak and butterscotch. Meanwhile, the palate brings red fruits, salted caramel, banana, toasted vanilla and oak. This rum opens up over time, offering roundness and layers of flavour 'that unfold with every sip', and it is recommended enjoyed neat. The new cask-aged bottling joins XO: The Peat Smoke Expression, created by former master blender Allen Smith in 2018, as well as The Pot Still Rum, The Port Cask Expression, Andean Oak Cask, and The Madeira Cask Expression, all created by Branker, who took over the master distiller role in 2019. The Master Blender Collection: The PX Sherry Cask Expression is bottled at 45% ABV. This expression will be limited to 4,200 bottles and will be available at select premium retailers globally in 700ml bottles for an RRP of £220 (US$289).]]>

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/07/top-10-spirits-launches-in-june-2023/feed/ 0 With the start of a new season comes a new range of seasonally appropriate spirits, from a collection of ready-to-pour sundowners to a gin that takes you back in time to summer 2022.

June was a busy month for spirits producers, as while one Scotch distillery unveiled its latest annual expression, another released one of its oldest bottlings to date. Meanwhile, one celebrity demonstrated she is the ultimate hostess by launching a range of canned cocktails she won't be able to enjoy herself, and a British producer decided to take things into her own hands and create a spirit designed for her favourite serve. For our take on the best new releases to hit shelves in June, keep scrolling.

Fettercairn 18YO annual release

Fettercairn 18yo Last month, Whyte & Mackay-owned Fettercairn revealed the 2023 release of its 18-year-old limited edition single malt. Having launched the first edition of Fettercairn 18 Years Old in 2022, which marked a ‘new dawn in progressive whisky making’ for the brand, the 2023 expression is said to be both innovative in style and substance, and celebrates ‘what makes Fettercairn different’. The whisky offers aromas of sugared almonds, baking spices, and a tropical sweetness of passionfruit and guava, while to taste, exotic syruped fruits, patisserie sugars, brioche, and spices with soft hints of berry fruit can be detected.

No. 3 Gin's bottled Gimlet

Gimlet June launch Berry Bros & Rudd-owned No.3 Gin unveiled a bottled Gimlet to mark World Gin Day (10 June) last month, the third ready-to-serve cocktail to be released by the London Dry gin brand. Created in collaboration with London’s Artesian bar, located in The Langham Hotel, the pre-bottled cocktail is described as a ‘unique twist on the classic Gimlet recipe’, using a blend of No.3 London Dry Gin with bergamot, citrus, and floral notes to produce a ‘deliciously zesty and refreshing drink’. The bottle features unique microscopic art by Justin Zoll, and £1 (US$1.29) from the sale of each bottle will go to Hospitality Action, a charity that supports all who work, or have worked, within hospitality in the UK.

Suntory's anniversary whiskies

To mark its centenary this year, the House of Suntory released Hakushu 18 Years Old Peated Malt and an 18-year-old Yamazaki whisky aged in mizunara oak casks last month. “Yamazaki 18 Years Old Mizunara was blended for our 100-year anniversary and features a rich texture created from a long ageing process,” said fifth-generation chief blender Shinji Fukuyo. “This expresses the delicate and meticulous attention to detail that went into its craftsmanship.” Meanwhile, the new Hakushu 18 Years Old Peated Malt is comprised of malt whiskies all aged for a minimum of 18 years. The new expression is said to offer a ‘new angle to the world of peated whisky’. In addition to the two new whiskies, Suntory also created limited edition labels for its 12-year-old Yamazaki and Hakushu whiskies to commemorate its 100th anniversary.

Cambridge Distillery's seasonal gin

'Tis the season for the latest release from Cambridge Distillery: Vintage 2022 Spring Summer. The seasonal expression has been crafted by master distiller William Lowe using a novo-dimensional distillation matrix. Temperature, timing, and pressure were among the nine variables used to tailor the treatment of each fresh botanical, and the result is a gin described as elegant on the palate with restrained fruit expression from flowering redcurrant, and supple citrus from lemon balm providing an ‘extended and graceful’ finish. Lowe commented: “The hottest temperatures we’ve ever seen here in Cambridge [in summer 2022] created unparalleled ripeness and richness to this seasonal expression, whilst retaining the elegant and vibrant lift for which our spring/summer releases have become so famous”.

De Kuyper RTD cocktails

There are now six new ready-to-serve (RTS) cocktails on the market thanks to Dutch liqueur brand De Kuyper. The six new RTS drinks form part of the brand’s strategy to ‘own the cocktail’, and the line-up includes: the Espresso Martini Cocktail (14.5% ABV), the Passionfruit Martini Cocktail (12% ABV), the Piña Colada Cocktail (14.5% ABV), the Strawberry Daiquiri Cocktail (14.5% ABV), the Cosmopolitan Cocktail (14.5% ABV), and the Clover Club Cocktail (12.5% ABV). Each serve in the new collection can be enjoyed in two ways: either shake the cocktails with ice to create a ‘bar-like experience’, or pour the chilled drink into a glass.

Frapin 30 Years Old

Frapin June launch There are 3,000 bottles available of the latest Cognac to come from Frapin: the 41.8% ABV, 30-year-old Millésime 1990, each priced at RRP £205 (US$261). With an ‘infinitely long’ finish, it is made using grapes from a 1990 harvest, on the brand’s 240-hectare Chez Pet vineyard. “This 30-year-old vintage is a truly exceptional Cognac. It is a result of a complex alchemy and embodies the Frapin style with its voluptuous aromatic richness and its infinitely long finish,” said cellarmaster Patrice Piveteau. The vintage Cognac has been aged for 30 years on the brand’s estate in the humid cellars, and is the latest addition to the Millésime range, which was launched 24 years ago with a 1979 bottling.

Sphynx Tequila

Sphynx Tequila Pop a bottle of Sphynx Tequila down in the middle of the table and you’ve got yourself a conversation starter. This Tequila, created by British-Indian couple Sukhvinder and Imran Javeed is the result of a decade-long ‘journey’, which saw the pair immerse themselves in the heartland of Tequila production in Mexico. All the Tequilas in the Sphynx Tequila range, which is composed of blanco, añejo, añejo cristalino, and extra-aged añejo black oak expressions, are made with 100% Blue Weber agave and contain zero additives. Each bottle of Sphynx Tequila is presented in the brand’s custom decanter, which symbolises good fortune and abundance, and is described as a timeless piece of art.

Announcing the launch of Betty Booze on her Instagram page, Lively wrote: @bettybooze [is] for those who want the alcohol… Because that’s what hosts do. We make something for everyone. And not usually ourselves.” The new line includes: Sparkling Bourbon with Apple Ginger Sour Cherry; Sparkling Tequila with Lemonade; and Sparkling Tequila with Lime Shiso.

Created using ‘rare’ peated casks, The Forty (43.5% ABV) is said to be one of the oldest peated malts to be released from a Speyside distillery, and is available as an ongoing release in specialist retailers in select global markets, priced at RRP £3,200 (US$4,084). Meanwhile The Forty Octave Cask Matured was matured in small octave casks, which are an eighth of the size of a regular cask, meaning only 135 bottles of the expression are available in select international airports, priced at RRP £3,800 (US$4,850).

Neurita Tequila

Neurita June launch You can’t have a Margarita without a Tequila, and so Lucy Smith, founder of Neurita, wanted to create a spirit that “captured the essence of what a Margarita is all about.” As such, she launched two expressions, Citrus and Rosa Neurita Tequila, which have been crafted with high-quality blue agave, and are the perfect base for both a classic and spicy Margarita. UK-based spirits bottler Heroes & Heretics (HAH) kicked off its Roller series in 2021 with The Whiskey Roller, a ready-to-drink (RTD) whiskey-based hard seltzer infused with natural flavourings of hibiscus, nutmeg and bay leaf. The duo has now added a pair of new expressions to the line: The Rum Roller and The Cachaça Roller. Browne, who starred on British reality show Made in Chelsea in 2019, is the ambassador of HAH, while Findlay, who featured on the show in the same year, is head of content creation. Browne commented: "Premium, convenient, sexy. We are making a statement with the cans, we want you to feel great when you drink these, no matter where or when, because it could be anywhere, anytime. Roll on the good times." HAH said it is currently in the process of selecting distributors, but will focus on ‘quality’ pubs and leading bars, with a view to being stocked in local supermarkets. The cans have previously featured at trade event Imbibe, and will later appear at London food festival Savour (21-23 July). Findlay added: "We have an amazing product that has so much opportunity to do so much with, almost too much. We are focusing on what we know best, parties. Roll on baby.” The brand said it would soon to release The Tequila Roller, and that a vodka iteration ‘may be in the works’. Noah Cross, head of product development, commented: "It was imperative to me that we used actual, proper, premium spirits in these cans. There are too many lack lustre ‘wet’ seltzers out there. We have come to deliver flavour back to the market." While the Whisky Roller clocks in at 4% ABV, the two new flavours rest at a higher 5% ABV. All three flavours can be bought as a six-pack of cans for £13.50 (US$18) from the brand's website, hahcws.com. Browne is not the only Made in Chelsea face to venture into the spirits industry – reality star Spencer Matthews has launched a number of low-alcohol products via his drinks company, Clean Co. ]]>

Only 2,400 bottles of The GlenAllachie 30-Year-Old Cask Strength Batch 3 were produced, having been aged in hand-selected Pedro Ximénez, oloroso and American virgin oak casks all dating back to the 1990s. Master blender Billy Walker said: “The GlenAllachie team and I are thrilled to bring the next batch of our oldest core expression to market. Bottlings of this age and quality undeniably demonstrate the reward for patience and perseverance in whisky making. “Our heather honey-forward distillate stands up well to ageing in rich Sherry wood, and the casks selected for this bottling certainly showcase this incredible union. Expect a refined whisky that exudes notes of rich cocoa, orange zest, honeycomb and cinnamon – a true delight.” Retailing for RRP £670 (US$864), the liquid embodies 'Sherry-matured indulgence', and presents notes of rich espresso, chocolate-covered hazelnuts, grated ginger and stewed plums. The whisky clocks in at 48.9% ABV, and casks for maturation were selected from GlenAllachie Distillery’s impressive stocks exceeding 50,000 casks across 16 on-site warehouses. Walker celebrated his 50-year tenure in the Scotch industry in 2022, marking the occasion with the release of a limited edition series of GlenAllachie single malts: The Past, Present & Future Series. BeatBox’s partnership with Lavigne marks the latest collaboration in the brand’s wider ‘Creator Series’, in which the cocktail brand teams up with with globally recognised ‘tastemakers’ to create exclusive, uniquely designed flavours and packaging that are distributed through the brand's large retail network. Zech Francis, vice-president of global marketing, BeatBox, said: "From the moment Avril told our team how she drinks a BeatBox before every studio session we knew this was a perfect fit for our growing Creator Series. "Partnering with Avril is going to unlock even more exciting opportunities for BeatBox as one of the fastest-growing ready-to-drink cocktail brands in the US." The Pink Lemonade ‘Party Punch’ is offered at 11.1% ABV, and presented in a 500ml resealable ‘eco-friendly’ container. The Sk8er Boi singer commented: "The partnership with BeatBox felt right from the start — I have never come across a brand that was as committed to providing their fans with a truly memorable experience, specifically pegged to music, than the BeatBox team. "Every facet of the collaboration, down to my involvement with the design of the package itself, felt authentic and true to me. I am excited for people to see the new packaging, and let us know what you think." BeatBox Beverages was said to be one of the fastest-growing RTD brands of 2022, and its expressions are currently available in more than 45,000 retail locations in the US. The brand claims to be the fastest-growing alcoholic beverage brand on social media, and has reached more than six million customers at festivals and events to date, with in excess of 100 music festivals and events planned in 2023. Thomas, who spent 18 years in executive leadership roles at French firm Pernod Ricard, has launched the venture to honour his family’s 100-year legacy of Cognac production. He has partnered with his cousin Amaury Thomas, an agricultural engineer who has spent more than a decade managing the family operations, and chief commercial and marketing officer Andrew Weir, who boasts more than 15 years experience marketing luxury spirits brands in the US, on the project. He said: “Our grandfather, Raymond, was a restless visionary and true entrepreneur. He was an important figure in the history of Cognac, having helped sustain the protected status of the appellation through the post-war era. “When faced with obstacles, instead of backing down, he doubled down and found his own Martingale, his own recipe for success: hard work, genuine relationships, skills, and craft in Cognac making. “We now have everything we need, and while my grandfather didn’t get to do this, he was entrusting us as the next generation to create an exceptional Cognac from our own estate. It’s important for us to make our family proud and we embrace the new challenge and expectation to do just that.” Weir described the Cognac as "exceptional", and compared to other spirits categories "such as premium whiskies and Tequila", it has seen "relatively lower levels of innovation". He added that Martingale will "disrupt this iconic category". He continued: “In my experience leading marketing plans and business growth for luxury spirits, I’ve always been drawn to genuine stories. Martingale’s story is quite incredible, from the vineyards to the distillery, the family chateau, and their obsession with quality.” Martingale marks the first branded consumer product from the family’s domaine, despite its century-long history of making Cognac for some of the most prestigious houses. “We supply some of the most prestigious brands in Cognac and have built one of the most coveted vineyards and distilleries in the region,” commented Amaury. “In honour of my grandfather and our family’s ongoing success in Cognac, we have decided to select some of our finest eaux-de-vie to blend, brand and bottle for the very first time. We have artfully selected and balanced eaux-de-vie from the top four crus in the area, ultimately creating a unique blend that is tailored to this generation’s tastes; one which delivers a fresher and more fragrant style of Cognac. “I love the paradox of a 100-year-old producer releasing their first ever product with a fresh, creative, and unexpected take. I am incredibly excited for us to share this story and exceptional liquid with the world.” Last month, we revealed the world's biggest-selling Cognac brands, according to our 2023 Brand Champions report. https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/07/bladnoch-unveils-ultra-rare-collection/feed/ 0 Scotland’s oldest working whisky distillery, Bladnoch, has launched The Samhla Collection, an 'ultra-rare' series of single malts.

Derived from the Scots Gaelic word meaning 'symbol' or 'likeness,' Samhla is a family of exceptionally rare single malt whiskies that is said to embody three generations of Bladnoch's history. The collection includes three vintages: The McClelland, distilled in 1966 and limited to only 15 bottles; The Prior, distilled in 1990 and limited to 50 bottles; and The Sage, distilled in 2008 and limited to 100 bottles. Bladnoch Distillery, which boasts a storied history dating back over 200 years, was brought back to life in 2015 by David Prior, and The Samhla Collection is said to serve as a tribute to the ‘authentic human relationships that have shaped Bladnoch's legacy’ since. "To preserve and nurture Bladnoch's heritage is a profound honour, and it symbolises the preservation of a legacy that has weathered the test of time,” commented Prior. “The Samhla Collection stands as a tribute to the remarkable journey Bladnoch has undertaken. It is a privilege to ensure its continued existence, and to carry the torch of tradition, innovation, and excellence for generations yet to come.” Representing the distillery's past and honouring its provenance, the 1966 whisky stands as Bladnoch’s oldest release to date. It is described as delicate yet complex, having been matured in an American oak cask. It boasts a gentle and delicate nose, with fresh green apples along with herbal fresh cut grass and forest aromas, with orange peel, chocolate, hints of mint leaves and polished oak on the palate. The 1990 vintage, representing Bladnoch's present, was distilled in the same year Prior began his entrepreneurial journey, and is said to encapsulate his vision and leadership in restoring the distillery as the heart of the local community. Its aroma is rich with liquorice sticks, dried apricots and dark dates, and its finish is long and viscous with a slight pepperiness. Finally, The Sage was distilled in 2008 – the year Prior's daughter, Sage, was born. Drawn from two American oak red wine hogsheads, this expression symbolises Bladnoch's commitment to sustainable whisky production, and its laying down of innovative casks of the highest quality in its warehouses so that it can one day hand over a ‘treasure chest’ of whisky to the next generation. It is described as having flavours of black cherries with strawberry jam and cracked black pepper. Prior said: "In recent years, we have witnessed an unprecedented surge in the appreciation and demand for rare whiskies, with collectors and enthusiasts recognising their inherent value as both liquid assets and cultural artefacts. These extraordinary expressions, carefully crafted over time, embody the essence of craftsmanship, history, and exclusivity that discerning investors seek." Those interested in purchasing can register their interest at www.bladnoch.com/thesamhlacollection. Bladnoch recently launched The Dragon Series – a collection of five single malts that celebrate the ‘natural unpredictability’ of whisky making.]]>

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/07/coffee-aged-tequila-makes-us-debut/feed/ 0 Quintaliza Reposado, the ‘world’s first’ Tequila to be finished in coffee-seasoned barrels, has launched in the US.

The 100% Blue Weber agave Tequila was finished in oak barrels that previously held organic coffee made from beans harvested in Chiapas, Mexico. The Tequila claims to be free of additives and has been certified organic. “We began with a simple, but bold, dream to bring great Tequila and great coffee together," said Mike Winters, founder and CEO of Quintaliza Tequila. “The idea was not only to create something very new and different in the Tequila category, but also to do it in a way that tastes great naturally without the use of any additives. “Bartenders in particular are driving the call for additive-free Tequila but struggle to find enough examples to fill a bar menu.” The agave used to make the Tequila was cultivated in Jalisco, Mexico. It was naturally fermented for three days and double distilled using traditional alembic stills before being matured in two different barrels – ex-Bourbon barrels and barrels seasoned with coffee. “We don’t soak coffee beans or do any infusing, mixing, or blending of any kind,” Winters added. “Quintaliza Tequila never touches one drop of liquid coffee. “It took us two years of experimentation and product development to get it right, but that’s what it takes to create something that’s never been done before.” The resulting liquid offers roasted coffee on the nose and palate with caramelised agave and earthy undertones. The palate brings oak wood, rich chocolate, and subtly sweet agave. Quintaliza's master distiller is Iliana Partida, who is part of a family that has been growing agave and making Tequila for four generations. Partida served as master distiller for Tres Agaves Tequila when it opened its first distillery in Amatitán, Mexico, in 2019. Quintaliza said it has been planting agave since day one as it aims to be more sustainable. In addition, the coffee grounds from the brand's coffee-seasoned barrels are repurposed as fertiliser to increase the pH level of the soil in the agave fields. Bottled at 40% ABV, Quintaliza Reposado is priced at US$79 per 750ml bottle.]]>

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/07/whistlepig-extends-superhero-rye-series/feed/ 0 Vermont-based distillery WhistlePig has unveiled the eighth edition of its superhero rye collection in the UK, called The Boss Hog VIII: LapuLapu’s Pacific.

Launched to coincide with the US' Independence Day celebrations tomorrow (4 July), the distillery has explored ‘unchartered territory in the world of rye’ to create a whiskey that is described as powerfully complex and distinctive from anything created before. The whiskey has been aged for nearly 18 years in new American oak before being double finished in high toast barrels that previously held small batch, single island-aged Philippine rum. It is the sequel to The Boss Hog VII: Magellan’s Atlantic, and continues the brand’s ‘circumnavigation’ voyage across the Pacific via its cask sourcing. With a sub-title name of LapuLapu’s Pacific, the release takes its inspiration and name historically and symbolically from the Philippines and the Filipino hero of the same name from 16th Century. Meghan Ireland, WhistlePig blender, said: “On the heels and success of Magellan’s Atlantic, it was a great challenge to find the perfect finish for the most special rye barrels in our warehouse. “We were already tracing Magellan in depth, and when we discovered LapuLapu’s story we knew we had to track down the best Philippines rum barrels we could for the sequel. “Before maturing rum for seven-to-10 years, the barrels were coopered from American oak and originally held Bourbon. In this way, they’ve made their own circumnavigation from American whiskey to the Philippines, and back again to us in Vermont. “The whiskey rests first in seven-year-old small batch Philippine rum casks, followed by a shorter finish in 10-year-old small batch Philippine rum casks. The older rum is darker and bolder, requiring less time for its barrels to impart notes in the whiskey. The end result is an amazingly unique and delicious whiskey.” On the nose, the whiskey is said to offer lush vanilla aromas that give way to delicate tropical notes including underripe bananas, freshly picked lemon and molasses. Meanwhile on the palate, LapuLapu’s Pacific offers fresh ground cinnamon with citrus zest, butterscotch, and lights notes of toffee, leading to a rich finish of tanned leather, light brown sugar, nutmeg and allspice with a long-lasting black pepper rye spice.

The Boss Hog VIII: LapuLapu’s Pacific is available from 4 July onwards in specialist retailers for RRP £675 (US$855.22).

On-trade partnerships In addition to the new product release, WhistlePig will also marking this year’s Fourth of July celebrations with a number of on-trade partnerships in London, UK. On the evening of 4 July, Stereo in Covent Garden will open at 5:30pm local time to offer WhistlePig tastings and cocktails. Live music from DJ Abi Murray will be playing throughout the evening. https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/06/blake-lively-launches-betty-booze/feed/ 0 Gossip Girl actress Blake Lively has ventured into the ready-to-drink (RTD) market with the creation of Betty Booze.

After first unveiling her collection of low-calorie Betty Buzz mixers in September 2021, the teetotal actress has now released a trio of RTD alcoholic canned cocktails, all of which clock in at 4.5% ABV and are crafted with sparkling water, real juice, and premium spirits. The drinks contain no artificial flavours, colours or sweeteners. The new line includes flavours Sparkling Bourbon with Apple Ginger Sour Cherry; Sparkling Tequila with Lemonade; and Sparkling Tequila with Lime Shiso. Announcing the launch of Betty Booze on her Instagram page, Lively wrote: "Drinking isn’t my thing. But for f* sake, flavour is. Homemade recipes. Real fruit. Real ingredients. Quality booze. No crap. Also a real time saver. Which is why I really did it. "@bettybooze if you’re also tired. Or lazy. But like me, you still have an ego about what you serve. Or if you just appreciate your mouth. Any excuse counts… "@bettybuzz Good for all ages and preferences. Zero alcohol. @bettybooze for those who want the alcohol. …Because that’s what hosts do. We make something for everyone. And not usually ourselves. Wait, I’m describing moms now." Betty Booze's Sparkling Bourbon with Apple Ginger Sour Cherry is a ‘season-defying favourite’, and sees 'sparkling' Bourbon paired with the ‘crisp flavours’ of apple, a kick of ginger and a dash of sour cherry. Created with premium Bourbon whiskey, the tasting notes include caramel, marzipan, and rye spice, with sweet, tangy and earthy flavours. Meanwhile, the Sparkling Tequila with Lemonade has been infused with warm oak, a squeeze of orange and a dash of butter - the latter described as ‘the secret ingredient’ that gives the drink such ‘a special smoothness’. Tasting notes include oak, vanilla, black pepper, as well as tart and silky flavours. Finally, Sparkling Tequila with Lime Shiso is an ‘effervescent’ Tequila-based RTD, paired with notes of lime and shiso to create ‘something exquisitely refreshing’. Tasting notes comprise agave, citrus and black pepper, as well as cinnamon and mint. Lively's husband, actor Ryan Reynolds, owns Aviation Gin and holds a stake in UK-based Wrexham Association Football Club (AFC). Betty Buzz was recently named as an official sponsor of Wrexham AFC.

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/06/de-kuyper-launches-six-rts-cocktails/feed/ 0 Dutch liqueur brand De Kuyper has created six ready-to-serve (RTS) tipples as part of its strategy to ‘own the cocktail’.

The six new RTS drinks are as follows: the Espresso Martini Cocktail (14.5% ABV), the Passionfruit Martini Cocktail (12% ABV), the Piña Colada Cocktail (14.5% ABV), the Strawberry Daiquiri Cocktail (14.5% ABV), the Cosmopolitan Cocktail (14.5% ABV), and the Clover Club Cocktail (12.5% ABV). The range will initially be available in the Netherlands, before it is rolled out to additional markets. Each cocktail will come in a 500ml bottle, priced at €11.99 (US$13) each. CEO Mark de Witte said: “We want to democratise cocktails and offer everybody the chance to enjoy their favourite cocktail at any time. “According to our guiding thought, we’ve introduced several innovations in recent years like De Kuyper Fizzy RTD, De Kuyper Zero, De Kuyper Syrups, and De Kuyper Batched Cocktails. “Our new ready-to-serve cocktails are the perfect addition to our cocktail proposition and vision to ‘own the cocktail’.” The brand noted that since 2019, at-home cocktail consumption has doubled, driven by the Covid-19 pandemic. Each serve in the new collection can be enjoyed in two ways: either shake the cocktails with ice to create a ‘bar-like experience’, or pour the chilled drink into a glass. The brand's Espresso Martini Cocktail, for example, contains a mix of espresso, De Kuyper Crème de Café Liqueur, and vodka. Meanwhile, the Passionfruit Martini Cocktail combines the brand's Passionfruit Liqueur with vanilla and lime. Earlier this week, Google Trends data showed searches for ‘how to drink Prosecco Martini’, also known as a Passion Fruit Martini, had risen by 312% over the last 12 months, according to RTD company The Cocktail Co. The Pornstar Martini is the second most-searched for Cocktail on Google, behind the Margarita. Last year, Diageo sold its peach-flavoured schnapps brand, Archers, to De Kuyper Royal Distillers for an undisclosed sum. The liquid was matured in American oak barrels, and showcases a ‘coastal influence’ that has been derived from the distillery’s location in Wick on the Caithness Coast, located on the northerly-most shores of Scotland. The bottling delivers notes of coconut, citrus, vanilla custard and candied almonds. Malcolm Waring, Pulteney distillery manager, said: “I’m so pleased to introduce Old Pulteney’s 13 Years Old to our range. "The expression truly embodies Pulteney Distillery’s signature coastal style, with a deliciously distinctive flavour that comes from being lovingly matured by the sea.” The 13 Years Old joins the brand’s global travel retail range of single malts, currently comprising the 10 Years Old and the 16 Years Old. Waring hand-selected the casks for the 13-year-old single malt. Waring added: “Our 13 Years Old is a wonderful dram that takes travel lovers on a journey of their own – starting with tropical flavours of coconut and citrus, reminiscent of sunny holidays, before making way for sweet notes of vanilla, toffee and candied nuts. "I’m really looking forward to sharing this expression with whisky drinkers across the continent.” The whisky is available in one-litre bottles at duty free stores at UK airports, resting at 43% ABV. It will be rolled out to Europe in the coming months. In September last year, Old Pulteney released the first whisky in a new range inspired by coastal locations around the world.]]>

The single pot still Irish whiskey was unveiled to a select group of whiskey enthusiasts at a summer solstice tasting event. It is the second whiskey to be produced by the distillery, following Boann’s first single pot still bottling to mark the winter solstice in December. It was the first time whiskey had been distilled in Drogheda in 160 years. The Summer Solstice whiskey has undergone three years of maturation in a Rivesaltes Rouge Barrique (fortified wine) cask from Southern France. “Following the resounding success of our augural Irish single pot still whiskey unveiled during last year's winter solstice celebration, Boann Distillery is aiming to captivate whiskey lovers again with our craftsmanship, passion and innovation,” said Pat Cooney, Boann founder and entrepreneur. Only 401 bottles have been produced of the Summer Solstice whiskey. Cooney added: “Our Summer Solstice whiskey embodies the essence of the season and captures the spirit of the sun's zenith, offering a symphony of flavours and a testament to our commitment to excellence.” The whiskey presents notes of red raisin, caramelised hazelnuts and burnt pineapple. Sitting at 60.5% ABV, the Summer Solstice single pot still whiskey is presented in 500ml bottles, and retails for €150 (US$163) on the brand’s website. De Soi Trés Rosé joins the brand's existing three variants: Golden Hour, Champignon Dreams and Purple Lune, all of which are vegan, gluten-free and non-GMO, and contain no artificial flavours or colouring. Inspired by the French ethos of pleasure with restraint, De Soi is pronounced ‘de swa’. Perry co-founded the brand with Amass master distiller Morgan McLachlan in 2022, who combined ethnobotany and ‘natural’ distilling methods to create adaptogenic drinks that provide a relaxing effect while delivering ‘sophisticated flavour profiles’, and allowing drinkers to ‘indulge sensibly’. Trés Rosé is described as a bold and balanced rosé-inspired ready-to-drink (RTD) canned apéritif, and is said to evoke the ritual of sparkling brut rosé while boasting notes of bright red fruits and subtle florals. The drink is made with a blend of adaptogens including lion's mane combined with ‘soothing’ saffron, and relaxing botanicals such as rooibos. Trés Rosé is presented in a canned format that features playful patterns and shades of pink so as to capture the ‘essence of summer’. The new expression can be purchased online in packs of four at www.drinkdesoi.com for US$25, or in single cans from select retailers across the US. Très Rosé will be available in 750ml bottles this autumn. The new look for the whiskey distiller pays homage to the brand’s heritage while taking a ‘modern approach’. The global brand refresh coincides with Four Roses’ 135th birthday this year. “In our 135th year, we’re thrilled to reveal our refreshed, modernised branding, which aims to maintain the spirit of our rich history while appealing to today’s Bourbon drinker,” said Kelly Edney, senior brand manager. “Four Roses is about creating and being part of life’s mellow moments, and we hope that our dedicated fans and future customers continue to feel that connection.” The new design includes a renewed 3D rose emblem and rose cluster on the cork of the bottle, as well as ‘brightened’ labels with gilded orders. The signature of master distiller Brent Elliott has also been added to each bottle. Furthermore, the brand's website has been updated with a ‘user-friendly’ design and now includes cocktail recipes, events, and purchase links. To mark the redesign, Four Roses has released a limited edition kit – The Ten Recipe Tasting Experience. Each set contains 50ml bottles of the 10 different Bourbon recipes that are used to make up the core Four Roses range. A QR code on the box directs users to a guided tasting video with Elliot. Elliot added: “It’s been a true honour watching the brand grow over the past 18 years that I’ve been with Four Roses and I look forward to this next chapter.” The limited edition kit will be available to buy from 30 June at the brand’s Kentucky-based visitor centres in Lawrenceburg and Coxs Creek. Craigellachie 37 Years Old Bourbon Cask was distilled in 1984 and initially aged in refill casks before being transferred into first-fill Bourbon casks. The whisky sits at 46.5% ABV and is limited to 3,012 bottles, each priced at £3,800 (US$3,245). Stephanie Macleod, Bacardi's director of blending, said: “Slumbering in refill casks for more than three decades has really allowed for Craigellachie’s challenging distillery style to shine through. The pineapple flavour note Craigellachie is so well known for has aged beautifully. “Finishing in first-fill casks – one of the most influential types of cask, in terms of their contribution to the flavour – has bestowed notes of creamy coconut, vanilla and citrus to the aged malt, giving it a boost of indulgent complexity.” Craigellachie 37 Years Old will first launch in travel retail exclusively via Gebr Heinemann until 1 August in Istanbul, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. Afterwards, the whisky will be made available in the UK, Germany, France, China and Taiwan. Macleod added: “The aroma opens with notes of pineapple tarte tatin and crème anglaise, balanced with soft cereals and notes of toasted banana bread. “Faint whispers of fire embers emerge with the addition of water then fade to spicy vanilla and delicate oak-derived coconut. “The palate is boldly complex with sweet acidity at first, mellowing to soft fruits and almonds with a long, indulgent finish.” In other Scotch related news, these are the world's biggest-selling Scotch whisky brands by volume.]]>

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/06/richard-paterson-creates-wolfcraig-gin/feed/ 0 Scotch producer Wolfcraig has ventured into the gin category with a bottling made by Richard Paterson OBE and Ian MacMillan.

Wolfcraig Gin marks the brand's first foray into juniper-based spirits, having already debuted its first offering in May – a 30-year-old premium blended whisky. Renowned master blenders Paterson and MacMillan created the gin, which boasts notes of juniper, orange peel, vibrant lemon and cassia, and is infused with 17 botanicals. MacMillan said: “Our gin has been designed to impress even the most discerning gin drinkers. Whether paired traditionally with citrus fruit or part of a classic short cocktail, we are really excited about gin lovers exploring its different expressions for the first time through the summer.

“I’m known as a bit of a traditionalist and this is a true pot still distilled premium gin, created by observing the time-honoured methods – this is a unique formulation of botanicals which complement each other in a way that can only be achieved through this most authentic method.

“It was important to Richard and I that our first gin collaboration was high-quality but versatile so it could be enjoyed by everyone from seasoned gin drinkers to casual consumers.”

MacMillan has more than 40 years' experience in the industry, and has worked with Scotch whisky brands including Bunnahabhain, Tobermory and Deanston, as well as gin brands such as Diageo's Tanqueray and Gordon's.

Paterson is widely known for his work with Whyte & Mackay, where he held the role of master blender since 1975.

The two spent several years developing the flavour profile, using the ‘most authentic’ method of gin creation, by combining and distilling botanicals in a copper still rather than adding them in afterwards.

Wolfcraig director Jamie Lunn said: “Anyone in the whisky world will understand what a big deal Richard and Ian bringing their decades of experience into creating their own original premium gin is." The gin retails for £39.95 (US$50.82) per bottle, and can be purchased from the Wolfcraig website. Lunn continued: “There are a lot of gins in the market but we expect there to be a lot of curiosity around what two of the most respected names in the whisky world can do with their first collaboration in gin. This is just the start of Wolfcraig's journey. “It is exciting to have our Wolfcraig Gin as part of our original portfolio to set the bar for our products in the drinks space, and we are looking forward to receiving feedback on our juniper-led sophisticated gin as people choose Wolfcraig as their drink of choice coming into the summer months.” Earlier this year, planning permission for the brand's multi-million-pound Scotch whisky distillery was rejected by Stirling Council for the second time. In January this year, Wolfcraig founding director Michael Lunn died following a short illness.]]>

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/06/altamura-distilleries-plans-gin-and-whisky/feed/ 0 The managing director of Italy’s Altamura Distilleries, Frank Grillo, discusses how the company is using local wheat to create vodka, and its plan to move into gin and whisky.

Located in the Puglia region, Altamura Distilleries recently launched its vodka in the UK. The wheat used to make the vodka has been grown in Altamura or the adjoining communes of Puglia in Italy for more than 2,000 years. Local wheat varieties such as Appulo, Arcangelo, Duilio and Simeto are known for their hardiness and complexity of flavour. Grillo said: "The original thought about Altamura Vodka was if you boiled a loaf of bread, you could drink it rather than eat it, so the mission was to let people experience Altamura in a liquid format, rather than a dry one.” Altamura Distilleries has sourced its wheat through the 'godfather of grain', Andrea Cappiello. The third generation to farm the fields of Altamura, Cappiello’s instinctive knowledge of his crop, accumulated over decades of hard graft, gave him the confidence to participate in the project: “If you can make the best bread in the world, you can make the best vodka.” Distillery plans At present, the spirit is distilled in Poland using a contract distiller, but there are plans to open a gin and vodka distillery in Puglia. Grillo explained: “Here [in Puglia] we’re going to first build out the gin distillery and then the vodka distillery. We didn’t know what reception the product was going to get, so we’ve started with a contract distiller to get set up. We ship all the wheat from Altamura to Poland and then ship the vodka back to Italy.” The vodka is triple distilled and filtered five times through charcoal, Grillo added. Altamura Vodka is currently available in India and the UK, and will soon launch in the US. "The good thing about vodka is it is the ‘little black cocktail dress’ of spirits," Grillo said. "It is consumed almost everywhere and can be easily adopted. “Brand Italy sells really well in Asia. Italian products are regarded as high quality, and given the provenance of Altamura wheat, that authenticity really helps us in markets that like Italian products.” It might be suggested that the sanctions against Russia, and its vodka, in many western countries in response to the invasion of Ukraine might be advantageous for a new vodka brand looking to gain traction. However, Grillo pointed out: “We slot right against Belvedere and Grey Goose, and there isn’t really a Russian product in that category. It’s those brands that own what I like to call the ‘€15 Martini market’.” Grillo also recommends serving the vodka in a Martini: “I’m a bit of a zealot about this – a 1940s three-to-one ratio with a really great vermouth and, in the style of The Savoy, a dash of orange bitters.” He also pointed out that Altamura Vodka has an umami character that works well with the olive brine of a Dirty Martini. New products But Altamura Distilleries is not stopping with using Pugliese wheat for vodka, Grillo disclosed: “There will be two gins; a London Dry, and one more geared towards a Negroni, which has a little less juniper and more burnt orange aroma so that it works with the Campari and vermouth. “We will also produce what would be known in American parlance as a wheated ‘Bourbon’ and a wheated rye whisky, though we can’t call them this, using 51% corn and 49% Altamura wheat and 51% rye and 49% Altamura wheat. Matured in charred new oak for four to five years. We haven’t got a name for them yet, we’ll have to come up with the ‘méthode traditionnelle’ of Bourbon.”]]>

Only 3,000 bottles of Frapin Millésime 1990 have been produced. The 41.8% ABV expression is described as elegant and taut, with a supple and bright appearance. With an ‘infinitely long’ finish, it is made using grapes from a 1990 harvest, on the brand’s 240-hectare Chez Pet vineyard. “This 30-year-old vintage is a truly exceptional Cognac. It is a result of a complex alchemy and embodies the Frapin style with its voluptuous aromatic richness and its infinitely long finish," said cellarmaster Patric Pivetteau. The vintage Cognac has been aged for 30 years on the brand's estate in the humid cellars, and is the latest addition to the Millésime range, which was launched 24 years ago with a 1979 bottling. On the nose, the liquid delivers aromas of candied fruit, dried fruit such as figs, and orange nuances. The palate contains flavours of orange liquorice and cinnamon. The Cognac is available to order from importer Louis Latour Agencies for RRP £205 (US$261). In 2021, NBA basketball player Rudy Gobert partnered with Cognac Frapin as the brand’s ambassador for North America. At the time, Gobert committed to elevating Frapin’s presence in the US and Canada, and supporting the brand’s releases – including Cognac Frapin VSOP. In May this year, The Spirits Business explored 10 Cognacs that were awarded with Master medals in our blind tasting competition: The Cognac Masters 2023. The new Benriach whiskies are The Forty and the travel retail-exclusive Forty Octave Cask Matured. Created using 'rare' peated casks, The Forty (43.5% ABV) is said to be one of the oldest peated malts to be released from a Speyside distillery. From June, The Forty will be available as an ongoing release in specialist retailers in select global markets, priced at RRP £3,200 (US$4,084). It was previously only available as a non-fungible token (NFT) on BlockBar. The Forty offers a ‘richly fruity’ nose with notes of sweet orange, plum, honey pomelo, dark chocolate-coated berries, and flavours of orchard fruits, red apple and white peach. Rachel Barrie, master blender for Benriach, said: “Fine Bourbon casks have gradually developed exquisite notes of honeyed pomelo and lush orchard fruits to create Benriach The Forty. “Over the decades of maturation, the smoky character of peated Benriach spirit refines and mellows, transforming into ripe fruit sweetness. This intricate character is interwoven with dark notes of chocolate, rich plum and smooth walnut from Port casks sourced from the Douro Valley." Meanwhile, The Forty Octave Cask Matured was matured in small octave casks, which are an eighth of the size of a regular cask. There are only 135 bottles of the expression available in select international airports, priced at RRP £3,800 (US$4,850). The 51.5% ABV bottling has an aroma of sweet plum, cherry and honey-glazed red apple, and flavours of ripe plum, pear, dark berries, cedarwood and silken oak. Barrie added: “Crafted from the staves of refill and first-fill American oak Bourbon casks, the octaves casks used for Benriach The Forty Octave Cask Matured create a sublime interplay of indulgent orchard and dark fruits, with a flawless silken oak finish.” Earlier this month, Brown-Forman relaunched its Highland single malt brand Glenglassaugh with a new trio of expressions and a coastal-inspired design.]]>

Whitley Neill Gin says that it is hoping to 'reignite' the tradition of passing down heirlooms, after research revealed nearly half (43%) of UK adults don’t plan to leave one to family or friends. To celebrate eight generations of its own distilling heritage, Whitley Neill is giving away £25,000 worth of diamonds within bottles of its Distiller’s Cut London Dry Gin. Johnny Neill, founder of Whitley Neill, said: “As a family brand, whose distilling knowledge has been passed down through eight generations, we value the importance of heritage and legacy. This is reflected in the creation of our Distiller’s Cut London Dry Gin, which boasts a quintessential, classic London Dry recipe that has truly stood the test of time. “With this in mind, we want to help the nation keep their own traditions alive and give them the opportunity to have something to pass down to others. “Jewellery is the item that most people would like to pass on to loved ones, and great quality gin and diamonds are both renowned for their quality and cut, so when thinking of how we could do this, diamonds seemed like a fitting choice.” Those who find one of the 15 hidden diamond engravings in the bottle corks of Distiller’s Cut Gin will win an ethical diamond with a minimum carat of 0.4. Of the one-in-three (36%) UK adults that said they currently possess something of sentimental or monetary value, jewellery was found to be the most received heirloom, accounting for almost two-thirds (61%) of the nation’s heirlooms. It was also cited as the item that most people believe is worth passing on, followed by books and household items including glassware, dinner service and cutlery. As such, Whitley Neill will also be offering a complimentary jewellery service to the winners. Also available to win when buying a bottle of Distiller’s Cut is an opportunity to enjoy a ‘Distiller’s Cut Diamond Experience’, which includes an exclusive tour of the City of London Distillery, home of Whitley Neill Gin – the only gin distillery in the heart of City of London for more than 200 years. Guests will also be able to enjoy a host of diamond-inspired gin cocktails from Whitley Neill’s mixologists. The Distiller’s Cut Diamond prizes will be available to win from now until the end of August, with bottles of Whitley Neill Distiller’s Cut available to buy from major retailers. To enter, those that discover a diamond engraving on their cork must to send a picture of their cork and serial number to diamondcompetition@whitleyneillgin.com. https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/06/sphynx-launches-tequila-range/feed/ 0 UK-based brand Sphynx has unveiled a range of Tequilas created to ‘epitomise sophistication’ and raise the bar for ‘true connoisseurs’.

Founded by couple Sukhvinder and Imran Javeed in Yorkshire, England, Sphynx Tequila is the result of a decade-long ‘journey’, which saw the pair immerse themselves in the heartland of Tequila production in Mexico. Their aim was to 'rediscover the authentic ways' of enjoying Tequila and to produce a spirit ‘so smooth that it would transcend expectations’. Sukhvinder explained: "Tequila has such a special place in my heart; my husband and I love the history, culture and traditions of Mexico and of course, their official spirit became our favourite. “We wanted to create a legacy brand and creating a Tequila was a natural choice for us. We are lucky to be working with a brilliant female-led distillery in the lowlands of Jalisco where we age our Tequila in custom wine barrels for a completely unique flavour profile. “It’s been a labour of love and we couldn’t be more excited to be officially launching Sphynx Tequila out in the world.” All the Tequilas in the Sphynx Tequila range are made with 100% Blue Weber agave and contain zero additives. The portfolio is composed of blanco, añejo, añejo cristalino, and extra aged añejo black oak expressions. Sphynx blanco is said to boast soft textures with notes of stewed agave and caramel, with a powerful herbaceous aroma. The añejo expression offers notes of dried fruits and toasted oak on the nose, while the extra aged añejo black oak bottling offers aromas of oak, caramel, vanilla and cooked agave. “Sphynx Tequila embraces the natural flavours of the finest agave, grown for a minimum of seven years. We chose to age our Tequila in various French oak barrels that allowed us to create custom profiles just for Sphynx Tequila, giving our drinkers a unique smooth flavour that allows you to simply pour it over ice, sip and enjoy.” Each bottle of Sphynx Tequila is presented in the brand’s custom decanter, which is made from 100% recycled glass. Symbolising good fortune and abundance, the decanter, described as a timeless piece of art, is said to serve as a centrepiece and conversation starter. "We wanted our Tequila profiles to reach you in an iconic decanter that reflects our dedication to craftsmanship," Sukhvinder said. "Our decanter represents the essence of the Sphynx itself – a talking point for any occasion." In other Tequila news, British brand Neurita recently launched two expressions designed to be mixed in Margaritas.]]>

The company, which this year celebrates its 325th anniversary, will expand its physical presence with The Spirits Shop, which is due to open in spring 2024. Located on the corner of St James’s Street, the new store will be a sister shop to its 63 Pall Mall outlet. Geordie Willis, brand experiences and creative director at Berry Bros & Rudd, said: “The launch of our first dedicated spirits shop shows our commitment to the premium and luxury spirits category, and will allow us to share our depth of range, fantastic products, and expertise through events and our in-store experience. “We’re delighted to extend the same incredible in-shop experience that our customers love and know us for in fine wine to the luxury spirits world.” Natalie Tennent, chief commercial officer, added: “We have a proud heritage in spirits – from creating the first one-million case whisky brand in Cutty Sark, to developing The Glenrothes whisky brand, and today being a multi-award winning independent bottler with the Berry’s Own Selection whisky range, we continue to enjoy significant demand from our customers and are pleased that our Spirits Shop will allow us to showcase our increasing range of premium and ultra-premium spirits. “Investing in our retail footprint, people, products, and producer relationships gives us the opportunity to extend our reputation as one of the best and most trusted spirit and wine merchants, both for drinkers and collectors alike.” Summer range Berry Bros & Rudd has also unveiled its latest seasonal spirits offering: The 2023 Summer Release. The collection features the brand’s second bottling from the ‘flourishing’ English whisky scene, as well as five single malt Scotch whiskies, an Exceptional Cask blended malt, and a Brazilian rum. The inclusion of an English whisky forms part of the company’s anniversary celebrations, and follows the success of its first English whisky bottling in the spring, which sold out in five minutes. For this collection, the company has bottled Masthouse 2017, a single cask whisky from Copper Rivet Distillery in Kent, which, despite its young age, is said to be one of the most fruit-forward liquids the Berry Bros & Rudd experts have tried. Jonny McMillan, reserve whisky manager at Berry Bros, commented: “In our very special anniversary year we wanted to feature some of the English distillers who are increasingly making waves in the industry, proffering an unparalleled sense of passion and expertise. “The second of four English whiskies to be released this year, Masthouse 2017 is a triumph, representing the promise of Copper Rivet Distillery and its production of one of the best distillates in the UK, perhaps the world.” Stephen Russell, founder at Copper Rivet Distillery, said the bottling "marks a coming of age for both English whisky and for Masthouse whisky". “Knowing the expertise, diligence and passion for quality with which Berry Bros & Rudd selects the whisky it bottles, we are very proud to see Masthouse single malt whisky in this collaborative bottling – and the cask the team has chosen is spectacular," Russell continued. “Our approach brings together the magic and artistry of whisky making, with the hard science of distilling. It is an intersection of tradition and innovation; it seems fitting that, as a first-generation family distillery, our first independent bottling collaboration would be with another family endeavour, with many generations of rich tradition.” The 2023 Summer Release, comprises of the Masthouse 2017 Cask #16 (£125/US$158.21); Exceptional Blended Malt 1979 Cask #5 (£450/US$569.56); Small Batch Benrinnes 2010 (£70/US$88.60); Glen Moray 2008 Cask #5710 (£90/US$113.91); Dufftown 2008 Pineau Finish Cask #96 (£100/US$126.57); Caol Ila 2010 Oloroso Finish Cask #311751 (£108/$136.69); Orkney 2006 Oloroso Finish Cask #5051 (£120/US$151.88); and Epris 2o11 Cask #11 (£105/US$132.90). The ‘reimagined’ Glenglassaugh range includes the 12 Year Old, Sandend, and Portsoy expressions. The collection has also been given a new look, inspired by the sand tide at Sandend Bay on the Moray coast. The brand's previous core range – Revival, Evolution and Torfa – has been discontinued and the whiskies are no longer being bottled. Rachel Barrie, master blender at Glenglassaugh Distillery, based in Portsoy, Banffshire, said: “The new portfolio brings together all the key elements of Glenglassaugh’s spirit. “Inspired by its truly unique coastal location, the new expressions transport us to a place where the spirit is awakened and soul invigorated, inviting us to stop, take a breath and appreciate our surroundings. “To taste Glenglassaugh single malt is to experience the coastal influence of Sandend Bay and the ancient harbour towns nearby. Shaped by the coalescence of land and sea, the senses are awakened by the imposing yet calming crash of waves and the sweet smell of gorse in the air." Bottled at 45% ABV, the flagship 12-year-old bottling is said to embody the brand’s ‘signature coastal style’. It is priced at RRP £50 (US$63). It was matured in Bourbon, Sherry and red wine casks and provides a nose of ripe apricot, figs and vanilla, with flavours of pistachio, dates, sweet fig, morello cherry and whipped cream. Meanwhile, the Sandend single malt was inspired by the crescent beach of Sandend Bay, and matured in Bourbon, Sherry and manzanilla casks. It carries a price tag of RRP £55 (US$70). The 50.5% ABV bottling has an aroma of ‘soft buttery vanilla ice cream drenched in tropical fruit, with chocolate and a touch of sea salt’. Flavours of salted caramel follow on the palate with hints of pineapple, cherry and grapefruit. The ‘richly peated’ Portsoy whisky (49.1% ABV) was inspired by the neighbouring harbour village of the same name. It can be purchased for RRP £60 (US$76) . Matured in Sherry, Bourbon and Port casks, the single malt carries notes of maritime, tropical fruit, Sherried dark soy, liquorice and sea kelp on the nose, alongside flavours of dark chocolate, fermented soy and charred mango, with treacle and sea salt. To celebrate the brand’s relaunch, Glenglassaugh has partnered with landscape photographer Richard Gaston to create a series of snaps that capture the distillery’s links to the land and sea. Later this year, Glenglassaugh will release single malts dating back to the 1960s and 1970s in honour of the brand’s heritage expressions. Glenglassauch Distillery was reopened in 2008 and became part of Brown-Forman’s portfolio in June 2016, following the firm’s acquisition of BenRiach Distillery Company. Last summer, Brown-Forman invested more than £30 million (US$36.5m) to double production at Highland whisky distillery The GlenDronach.]]>
